Lap sidings are normally supplied in a variety of patterns either green unseasoned or dry in clear or knotty grades and with a smooth or saw textured face. The two most common patterns for lap siding are going to be shiplap with a center match pattern or channel rustic. Cedar is also graded based on appearance which is called appearance grade or select lumber. Clear grades are manufactured to order. Highest grade fewest knots is the top of the line wood.

This is the rarest. For horizontal applications start with the bottom course and work up with the channels pointing upwards. Lap sidings can come in a variety of different sizes patterns and grades. This is an architect grade.
